What is Odyssey of the Mind and why do teams trade pins?
Odyssey of the Mind (OM or OotM) is a creative problem-solving competition where teams develop solutions to long-term challenges involving engineering, performance and creativity. Pin trading is a beloved tradition at OM tournaments, especially World Finals, where teams from different states and countries swap pins that show off their solutions, team identities and creative approaches. Pins celebrate the journey, the creativity and the friendships formed through OM.
Can we design pins around our OM problem solution?
Absolutely! The most creative OM pins reflect each team's problem solution and approach, pulling in elements from the performance, technical solution or creative theme. Popular features include problem numbers, team names, mascots that represent the solution and visuals from performances. Many teams add their state or country, tournament year and inside references OM families will love. Creativity in pin design mirrors creativity in problem solving!
How many pins should our OM team order?
Most Odyssey of the Mind teams order 100-150 pins. For a 5-7 person team at a regional tournament, 100 pins give each member 15-20 pins. Teams advancing to State tournaments might order 125-150 pins, and World Finals teams typically order 150-200 pins, since this international event features extensive trading with teams from around the globe. Add extras for coaches, parents and memorable trades with international teams.
What size pins are best for OM teams?
Most OM teams choose 1.5-1.75 inch pins, which leave room for creative designs and problem-specific elements. Elementary teams often prefer 1.5 inch to stay on budget, while middle and high school teams frequently select 1.75-2 inch pins for more detailed designs that showcase their solutions. For most academic competition teams, 1.5 inch is the best balance of creative detail and affordability.
When should we order pins for World Finals?
Order right after you qualify. State and regional tournaments typically wrap up in March-April, and World Finals is in late May. Standard production takes 2-3 weeks plus shipping, so ordering as soon as you qualify makes sure pins arrive before the event. Rush production is available, but it costs more and availability may be limited during peak season (April-May).
